SOLWEZI EAST INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE PETER ILUNGA GRANTED BAIL IN NRC IRREGULARITIES CASE

The Solwezi Subordinate Court has granted bail pending trial to Independent Solwezi East parliamentary candidate Peter Ilunga, who is facing charges relating to alleged irregularities involving his National Registration Card.
Solwezi Principal Resident Magistrate Mambwe Mukonde granted Mr. ilunga bail in the sum of K60,000 despite objections from the state that investigations into the matter were still ongoing.
Mr. Ilunga, 49, is alleged in the first count to have been found in possession of two National Registration Cards bearing the same number but reflecting different dates of birth, contrary to the National Registration Act.
In the second count, he is accused of presenting one of the National Registration Cards to the Returning Officer during parliamentary nominations for the Solwezi East constituency on 20th May 2026.
Mr. Ilunga who was arrested in Lusaka on 25th June 2026 has denied both charges.
He previously served as Mushindamo District Council Chairperson under the UPND from 2021 to 2026 before resigning to contest the Solwezi East parliamentary seat as an independent candidate in the 13th August general elections.
The matter has been adjourned to 22nd July 2026 for commencement trial.
