DOCTORS CALL OFF PLANNED STRIKE

By Patricia Male

The Resident Doctors Association of Zambia have called off their planned countrywide strike which was to commence today march 1, 2023, following their omission from the 10.5% salary increment for civil servants.
Addressing the media in Lusaka this morning, Association President Dr. Mweushi Mphande said the doctor’s decision to call of the strike follows a meeting held between the association and the minister of health where it was agreed that the 10.5% salary increment is also effected for doctors.
Dr. Mphande explains that government has agreed to meet the affected doctor’s demands of awarding them a 10.5% just as is the case with other civil servants.
He states that what had agitated the doctors was that they were left out of the government salary hikes when they have risked their lives and sacrificed for the country during the covid-19 pandemic where most members died and worked long hours at the peak of the pandemic when other civil servants were working from home.
Dr. Mphande says the association is positive that government will fulfil its commitment starting this month as indicated.
