CHOMA DISTRICT HIT BY A SHORTAGE OF ONION

By Tryford Bukowa JR

Choma District in Southern Province has been hit by a shortage of onions leading to increased prices, with a 10kg bag ranging between K400 and K450.

Some traders have told Phoenix Business News that the price for both red and white onions which was recently selling around K200 for a 10kg bag has doubled making it difficult to make profits.

The traders have explained that the hike in prices is because they are buying the onions from Lusaka due to the shortage of the produce in Choma which they have attributed to poor harvest as a result of the floods that were experienced in the province which washed away some crops.

They say some of their colleagues have resorted to spring onion from local farmers which was not properly grown and is scarce on the market.
