SECURITY SITUATION IN DR CONGO REMAINS A CONCERN TO SADC TRUCK DRIVERS

 By Michael Kaluba

The SADC Truck Drivers’ Association has disclosed that the security situation for drivers in the SADC region has mostly improved, with the exception of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where incidents continue to occur.
SADC Truck Driver's Association president Eugene Ndhlovu says while stakeholders have made progress in ensuring driver and property protection, the Congo DR still requires more measures to reduce thefts and ensure driver safety.
According to Mr. Ndhlovu, protracted formalities in that country have left drivers stranded at some sites for up to 6 days without washrooms or toilets, putting their health at risk.
He adds that the situation has exposed drivers to thefts after criminals attack them, as well as corruption among police personnel in that country in order to promote faster travel in areas that require approval and documents.
