CONCERN THAT CURRENT CHOLERA AND COVID-19 OUTBREAKS PUTTING A STRAIN ON ZAMBIA’S HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

Stakeholders in the health sector are concerned that the presence of cholera and Covid-19 being experienced has put a strain on Zambia’s health care system.

In an interview with Phoenix News, United Health and Allied Workers of Zambia President Daniel Mwimbe says currently, the health care system is addressing the dual burden of cholera and Covid-19, leading to reduced manpower in most health facilities as most workers are working from cholera treatment centers.

Mr. Mwimbe notes that the reduced man-power in public health institutions has led to some health workers working continually to ensure they provide services to the general public, a move he says has proved challenging.

He has since called on the government to consider providing proper incentives for health workers who are risking their lives to serve others affected by the disease outbreaks and to consider employing volunteers who are on the frontline fighting the cholera outbreak as a token of appreciation for their bravery despite the associated risks.

And Zambia Union of Nurses Organization General Secretary Fray Michelo says despite the strain caused by Covid-19 and cholera on health workers, their ability to respond effectively to cases has not been compromised.
