There was a near punch-up among the 8 Mine-Worker Unions at Kitwe’s Garden Court Hotel this morning after 5 of the unions collectively accused the other 3 of hypocrisy and creating divisions.
Miners and Allied Workers Union President Kelvin Namunji and 4 other unions had just finished a media briefing when Mine Workers Union of Zambia President Joseph Chewe and national union of miners and Allied Workers President Saul Simujika stormed in to refute the accusations made against them during the briefing.
The 5 unions disowned a recent press statement by the 3 mineworker unions namely MUZ, NUMAW, and UMUZ, whom they accused of working in isolation and making misleading media comments about Mopani and Konkola Copper Mines-KCM-.
During the confrontation, Mine Contractors, Factory and Allied Workers Union President Levi Chimfwembe and MUZ President Joseph Chewe went for each other's necks and calling each other names.
The 5 unions that held a press briefing include Miners & Allied Workers Union, Consolidated Miners and Allied Workers Union of Zambia and Mine Contractors’ Factory and Allied Workers Union.
Others are Mine Industry Union of Contracting Workers and Miners’ Technicians’ Artisans and Allied Workers Union of Zambia.
