POLICE STATEMENT ON THE MURDER OF ARON KATONGO


June 8,2024-On Thursday, June 6, 2024, at approximately 13:30 hours, Makeni Police Station received a tip-off from a concerned member of the public, aged 62, residing in George Compound. The passerby reported discovering a dead body along 70/70 Road near Makeni Seedlings Limited. The body had a cut on the stomach with protruding intestines, and it was suspected that the individual had been dumped there the previous night as the body was still fresh.
Police officers promptly visited the scene and found the body of a male in his early 30s lying in the grass beside the road. The deceased was light in complexion, approximately 1.6 meters tall, dressed in a pink golf T-shirt, black ripped jeans, a single grey and black Jordan sneaker, and had long beards. The body was subsequently taken to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary for identification, postmortem, and burial. Today, June 8, 2024, the relatives of the deceased have identified him as Aron Katongo.
Brief facts of the matter are as follows:
On June 6, 2024, at 22:35 hours, Chilanga Police Station received a report of an abandoned vehicle via telephone from a concerned student at ZAMIM in Chilanga. The student reported an abandoned Toyota Runx, registration number BAK 5204, which had been observed between 07:00 hours and 22:35 hours on the same day at ZAMIM in Chilanga.
The student initially noticed the vehicle parked near ZAMIM at around 07:00 hours. Upon discovering that the vehicle was still parked at the same spot around 22:00 hours, he checked and found that the doors were not locked and the keys were on the seat. He then called Chilanga Police Station to inform the officers about the incident.
Police officers from Chilanga rushed to the scene and confirmed the report. They discovered a silver Toyota Runx, registration number BAK 5204, with the doors unlocked and keys on the seat. The car stereo was missing, and there was a driving license bearing the name Aron Katongo and a letter of sale for a house in Kanyama Compound. The vehicle was subsequently parked at Chilanga Police Station.
Police investigations are ongoing, and we urge anyone with information related to this case to come forward and assist with our inquiries.
