Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary in Charge of Electricity, Engineer Arnold Simwaba, has urged mining companies to take advantage of government’s open access policy and invest in generating their own electricity for operations.
Engineer Simwaba tells phoenix news that mines must secure alternative power sources in the event that power utility, ZESCO fails to meet their electricity demand.
He added that investment in energy production is urgent as Zambia targets to generate 10,000 megawatts of electricity by 2030.
Engineer Simwaba has also noted that as major consumers of power, mines should be key development partners in achieving the 10,000megawatts target.
The Permanent Secretary further stated that there are no limitations on other investments that mines can venture into, adding that government has created a conducive environment for businesses to diversify.
