CASABLANCA - Copper Queens head coach Nora Häuptle says switching off social media helped her players remain fully focused as Zambia began its 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign with a commanding 6-0 victory over Egypt.
The emphatic win in the Group C opener marked one of Zambia's biggest victories at the continental tournament and sent the Copper Queens to the top of the group on goal difference.
Häuptle revealed that one of her key priorities before the match was ensuring her players avoided distractions and concentrated solely on football.
"I demanded from my team that we have a high focus, that we really have our minds on football and not wherever, in terms of social media and whatever," Häuptle said.
She said the players responded exceptionally well, delivering a disciplined and mature performance from the opening whistle until the final minute.
The Swiss coach also praised her side for maintaining their attacking approach throughout the match instead of easing off after establishing a comfortable lead.
Häuptle further commended the substitutes for making an immediate impact whenever they were introduced.
She reserved special praise for veteran defender Racheal Nachula, describing the 40-year-old as an inspiration to the younger members of the squad.
According to Häuptle, Nachula continues to outperform many younger players in fitness tests while providing outstanding leadership both on and off the pitch.
Looking ahead to Zambia's next Group C fixture against Nigeria, Häuptle acknowledged it would be a much tougher contest but insisted her team would remain focused on executing its game plan.
Captain Barbra Banda starred in the victory with four goals, while Racheal Nachula and debutant Eneless Phiri also found the back of the net to complete Zambia's dominant performance.
