NFNC PLANS TO IMPROVE SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAM THROUGH MEAL DIVERSITY
By Josphat Mbewe
The National Food and Nutrition Commission-NFNC- says it is working to diversify meals under the school feeding programme to improve the nutritional value of food provided to learners.
NFNC Executive Director Dr. Muntanga Mapani tells Phoenix News that serving the same type of food consistently may discourage some children from participating in the programme, making meal diversification important.
Dr. Mapani explains that government is currently focused on rolling out the school feeding programme to all schools across the country, after which efforts to diversify meals will be expanded.
She says government in collaboration with other stakeholders has already begun introducing eggs and milk to school menus in selected districts as part of the food diversification initiative.
Dr. Mapani has emphasized that the introduction of the school feeding programme has been a major milestone, contributing to a reduction in malnutrition, particularly in rural areas.
