Police probe officers over handling of Makeni Villa domestic violence complaint
POLICE have launched investigations into officers who handled the domestic violence complaint that was reported before the shooting incident in Lusaka’s Makeni Villa area.
This follows public concern over how police managed the complaint lodged by Theresa Nyambe, who was later shot dead together with her brother Innocent Nyambe, a lawyer, by her husband Clifford Chileshe, who later turned the gun on himself.
According to Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi, the investigations would establish whether officers followed proper procedures and professional standards when handling the matter.
Chilabi said the probe would specifically examine the officers’ conduct in dealing with the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) complaint.
“The Zambia Police Service has, with immediate effect, instituted investigations into the conduct of the officers who handled the matter. The investigations will review the officers' compliance with established Zambia Police Service procedures, professional standards, and applicable laws in the execution of their duties, particularly in relation to the handling of Gender-Based Violence cases,” Chilabi said.
He said if the investigations find any negligence, misconduct or failure to follow procedures and the law, appropriate action would be taken against those found wanting.
Chilabi assured the public that the investigations would be conducted in an impartial and professional manner, with the findings to be made public once concluded.
Theresa had earlier reported an assault complaint against her husband at Kanyama Police Station on Monday, after sustaining injuries including a cut on her upper lip, swollen eyes, bleeding from the nose and general body pains.
She later returned to the Victim Support Unit at Kanyama Police Station yesterday, where she was issued with a call-out for her husband to appear before police.
She was accompanied by her brother Innocent, and the two later went to serve the document at the couple’s home in Makeni Villa.
However, Chileshe shot the two before taking his own life.
