KITWE - Former Zambia Police Service spokesperson Rae Hamoonga has been appointed Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer, replacing Mwala Yuyi, who has been recalled to Lusaka for redeployment.
Mr. Hamoonga’s transfer comes eight months after he was promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police and appointed Western Province Police Commanding Officer.
Before taking up his role in Western Province, Mr. Hamoonga served as the Zambia Police Service spokesperson for nearly four years, becoming one of the country’s most recognisable law enforcement officials.
In 2024, he was honoured by the Zambia Institute of Public Relations and Communication (ZIPRC) as Best Spokesperson, in recognition of his professionalism, transparency and effective public communication.
During his tenure in Western Province, Mr. Hamoonga led efforts aimed at maintaining peaceful electoral policing, combating stock theft and dismantling criminal syndicates operating in the region.
Meanwhile, outgoing Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer Mwala Yuyi has thanked journalists in the province for the support they extended to him during his tenure.
In a farewell message, Mr. Yuyi said he appreciated the cordial working relationship he enjoyed with members of the media and encouraged them to offer the same cooperation to his successor.
“I will miss the good working relationship we developed. I hope you will extend the same support you gave me to my successor, Mr. Rae Hamoonga,” he said.
Mr. Yuyi has since been transferred to Lusaka, where he awaits redeployment.
