The Lusaka Magistrates' Court has committed a 27-year-old woman of Meanwood Kwamwena phase 4 to the high court for trial on two counts of murder following allegations that she threw two children aged two and six, into the Ngwerere River.
Mary Kashilika this morning appeared before Lusaka Chief Resident Magistrate Thandose Chabala for explanation of the charges.
After confirming that the accused understood the allegations against her, the court committed the matter to the High Court for trial after Director of Public Prosecutions Gilbert Phiri issued a certificate of committal in accordance with section 254 of the criminal procedure code.
Kashilika was arrested on march 21, 2026, following a report lodged on February 25, 2026, at Kwamwena Police Post by Titus Kamanga, 29, of Meanwood Kwamwena phase 5.
According to the allegations, Kamanga reported that his second wife had thrown his two children from his first wife, fanny Kanyinji, 26, into the Ngwerere River near Meanwood Phase 5.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Kamanga is in a polygamous marriage and that tensions had allegedly developed within the household due to jealousy, as one wife had children while the other did not.
it is alleged that on the day of the incident, Kamanga was at work while his first wife was outside carrying out household chores, with the two children reportedly inside the house eating before they later went missing.
Kashilika is facing two counts of murder contrary to section 200 of the penal code, an offence that is triable by the High Court.
