ZNBC Journalist MacPherson Mukuka Released After High Court Declares Detention Unlawful

LUSAKA - ZNBC journalist MacPherson Mukuka has been released from detention after the Lusaka High Court declared his 14-day detention unlawful and unconstitutional.

Mr. Mukuka was arrested and charged with harassment using electronic communication under the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act.

The charge relates to the alleged circulation of an audio recording on social media.

Mr. Mukuka had spent 14 days in custody before the High Court ordered his immediate release.

The court ruled that his continued detention violated his constitutional rights and declared the detention unlawful and unconstitutional.

His release follows a legal challenge over the legality of his continued custody, with the High Court determining that the authorities had not lawfully justified the 14-day detention.

The development has renewed attention on the treatment of journalists and the application of cybercrime laws in cases involving digital content and social media.
