LUSAKA - Thursday, August 13, 2026, has been declared a public holiday to give eligible voters an opportunity to participate in the General Election.
According to Cabinet Office Circular No. 12 of 2026 dated August 10, the declaration is made pursuant to Article 56 (2) of the Constitution of Zambia, which provides that the day on which a general election is held shall be a public holiday.
The circular states that Thursday, August 13, 2026, the day on which the general election will be held, will therefore be a public holiday.
The declaration is intended to accord all eligible voters the opportunity to participate in the elections.
Cabinet Office has, however, clarified that Friday, August 14, 2026, will not be a holiday and will be a normal working day.
The circular, signed by Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick K. Kangwa, directs all recipients to urgently bring its contents to the attention of employees under their supervision, including statutory bodies.
