Changala Defends Tonse Alliance Fundraising as Democratic

LUSAKA - Civil rights activist Brebner Changala has defended the Tonse Alliance's decision to seek financial contributions from members of the public, describing the initiative as a legitimate and democratic way of financing political activities.

Mr. Changala said fundraising through voluntary contributions promotes inclusivity by allowing ordinary citizens to support political organisations they believe in, rather than relying on a few wealthy individuals to finance political parties.

He said the approach reflects genuine grassroots support and is a common practice among organisations, clubs and associations, where members contribute towards operational costs.

Mr. Changala further argued that criticism of the fundraising initiative is misplaced, noting that the United Party for National Development (UPND) also appealed for financial contributions from its supporters while it was in opposition.

He said records of those fundraising appeals remain publicly available, making it inconsistent for the ruling party to criticise a similar initiative by the Tonse Alliance.

Mr. Changala also criticised the ruling party for focusing more on attacking the opposition than addressing governance issues.

He said it is the responsibility of the opposition to provide checks and balances on the government, not the other way around.

He added that political competition should remain centred on democratic principles rather than criticism of legitimate fundraising efforts.
