SAMFYA - The upgrading of the Samfya-Kasaba Road via Lubwe to bituminous standard, including 5 kilometres of township roads in Lubwe, has reached 22 percent physical progress.
The project, located in Luapula Province, is being implemented by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (Z) Limited in joint venture with Palmetto Trading Limited at a contract sum of ZMW 937,929,384.70, inclusive of VAT.
Consulting services for the project are being provided by Zulu Burrow Consulting Limited.
Speaking during a media tour of the project, Road Development Agency (RDA) Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Manager Anthony Mulowa said works commenced on September 19, 2025, and are scheduled for completion in September 2027 under a 24-month contract period.
Mr. Mulowa said the project involves upgrading approximately 80 kilometres of the Samfya-Kasaba Road to bituminous standard, alongside the construction of an additional 5 kilometres of township roads in Lubwe.
“The scope of works comprises the upgrading of approximately 80 kilometres of the Samfya-Kasaba Road to bituminous standard, together with an additional 5 kilometres of township roads in Lubwe,” he said.
The project forms part of the Government's efforts to improve road infrastructure and connectivity in Luapula Province while supporting socio-economic development through better access to markets, tourism destinations and essential services.
The Samfya-Kasaba Road is considered a strategic transport corridor in the province, linking the lakeside town of Samfya to the Kasaba area, which has significant tourism potential.
Once completed, the road is expected to improve accessibility, reduce travel times and vehicle operating costs, and stimulate economic activity in fishing, agriculture, trade and tourism.
The additional township roads in Lubwe are also expected to improve local mobility and access to social and economic services for surrounding communities.
