Form Two Pupil Dies After School Counselling Over Relationship

LUMEZI - A 19-year-old Form Two pupil in Lumezi District has died after reportedly being found unconscious shortly after being counselled by school authorities over a relationship with a fellow pupil.

The deceased, Clement Chibanga, was a pupil at Kazonde Primary School in Chief Zumwanda's area, where he had reportedly been in a relationship with a female pupil at the same school.

The relationship reportedly came to the attention of school authorities, who summoned the two pupils for counselling on Wednesday.

Clement and the female pupil were counselled by the Deputy Headteacher and other members of staff in the presence of their parents.

After the counselling session, Clement left the office and went away.

Later that evening, another pupil reportedly found him unconscious behind the school toilets and alerted school authorities.

He was rushed to Lumezi District Hospital, where he was admitted and received treatment.

However, Clement died at the hospital yesterday at around 08:00 hours.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, saying the matter was reported to Lumezi Police Post at around 14:00 hours by the school's headteacher, Iress Chirwa, aged 36.

Mr. Mweemba said police officers visited the hospital, where the deceased's body was deposited in the mortuary pending a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.

He said an inquiry file has since been opened and investigations are underway.
