Government Announces Official Funeral for Late Dr. Joseph Katema


 LUSAKA - The Government of Zambia has announced that the body of former Cabinet Minister Dr. Joseph Katema will be repatriated from India today, Thursday, August 6, 2026, ahead of an official funeral and burial in Lusaka.

According to a statement issued by Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick K. Kangwa, Dr. Katema's remains are expected to arrive at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport at 14:35 hours aboard Emirates Airlines.

President Hakainde Hichilema has accorded the late former Cabinet Minister an Official Funeral in recognition of his distinguished service to the nation.

Government has announced that Dr. Katema will be laid to rest on Friday, August 7, 2026, at Leopards Hill Memorial Park in Lusaka.

Before the burial, an official funeral church service will be held at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus starting at 10:00 hours.

The President has also declared Friday, August 7, 2026, a One Day of National Mourning, which will be observed from 06:00 hours to 18:00 hours.

During the period of national mourning, all national flags across the country are to fly at half-mast.

The Government has urged members of the public to take note of the funeral arrangements and join the nation in honouring the late Dr. Katema's contribution to Zambia.
