LUSAKA - The Government has called on media houses to uphold ethical and professional journalism as Zambia prepares for the August 13 General Election.
Speaking during a press briefing, Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana urged media organisations to play a responsible role in safeguarding peace, unity and national stability throughout the electoral period.
Mr. Kawana emphasised that accuracy, fairness and responsibility should take precedence over speed when reporting election-related developments.
He urged media houses to verify information, provide balanced coverage and adhere to the highest standards of professional journalism before publishing or broadcasting reports.
Mr. Kawana also cautioned journalists against spreading misinformation and disinformation, warning that inaccurate reporting could fuel unnecessary tension and undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
He reminded media organisations that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) is the only institution legally mandated to announce and publish official election results.
Media organisations were further advised against publishing exit polls or Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) results, as these are unofficial and could potentially mislead members of the public.
Mr. Kawana also called on editors and media owners to strengthen editorial oversight and ensure journalists maintain professionalism, integrity and ethical standards throughout the electoral process.
He said the Government remained committed to working with the media to promote credible, factual and responsible reporting that strengthens democracy and preserves peace before, during and after the elections.
