LUSAKA - Preparations for President Hakainde Hichilema's inauguration are in full gear at the National Heroes Stadium, with final works expected to be completed by Friday.
Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Principal Public Relations Officer Bobby Ng'andu said Government was satisfied with the progress of works at the stadium following an inspection led by Deputy Secretary to Cabinet for Administration Dr. Oliver Kalabo and Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe.
Mr. Ng'andu said the works were progressing well and Government was confident that the facility would be ready for the inauguration once the final touches were completed.
He said Government was also putting measures in place to protect the stadium's turf during the inauguration, including bringing in a turf protector from South Africa.
During the inspection, Dr. Kalabo and Mr. Chileshe toured various sections of the stadium, including VIP facilities, washrooms, the Presidential holding room and areas designated for the main stage.
The rehabilitation of the stadium is being undertaken through a multi-sectoral Government approach involving the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts, Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Zambia National Service and Zambia Air Force.
Works at the facility have included improvements to VIP facilities, carpeting, tiling, plumbing, rehabilitation of ablution facilities, painting, electrical works and repairs to damaged sections of the stadium.
The Western VVIP Stand has also been refurbished, with VIP rooms receiving new furniture and appliances.
Meanwhile, damaged sections of the stadium roof have been attended to as Government works towards a permanent solution for complete roof replacement.
The inauguration date has not yet been communicated by the relevant authorities.
