LUSAKA – Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana has defended President Hakainde Hichilema's decision to return to provinces where he has already campaigned, saying there is nothing irregular about the move.
Mr. Kawana said the President is following a campaign schedule prepared by his campaign team to ensure he reaches districts that were not covered during earlier campaign tours.
He explained that concerns over the President revisiting provinces are misplaced, noting that stakeholders agreed during the development of the campaign timetable that the Head of State would be exempt from the schedule.
According to Mr. Kawana, the arrangement allows the President to campaign wherever necessary without being restricted by the agreed timetable.
He was responding to complaints from opposition parties, which argued that President Hichilema's decision to return to the Copperbelt Province for a second round of campaigns creates an unfair campaign environment and could lead to scheduling conflicts with rival political parties.
Mr. Kawana maintained that the President's campaign movements are consistent with the agreed framework governing the election campaign period.
