LUSAKA - Tonse Pamodzi Alliance Secretary General Celestine Mukandila has challenged Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana to report to the police any opposition political parties allegedly orchestrating acts of violence ahead of the August 13 General Election.
Mr. Mukandila’s comments follow allegations by Mr. Kawana that opposition political parties are behind recent incidents of political violence recorded during the election campaign.
Speaking in an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Mukandila dismissed the allegations and said there is evidence, including pictures and videos, that could help identify individuals allegedly responsible for the recent disturbances.
He argued that authorities should focus on identifying and prosecuting individuals accused of committing offences rather than making broad accusations against opposition political parties without presenting evidence.
Mr. Mukandila further criticised what he described as the failure to prosecute individuals accused of criminal conduct because of their alleged affiliation with the ruling party.
He stressed that the law should be applied fairly and equally to all individuals regardless of political affiliation, arguing that equal enforcement is essential for maintaining public confidence in the country’s legal system.
The Tonse Pamodzi Alliance has called for any individuals identified as being involved in political violence to be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
