LUSAKA - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has launched a contingency plan aimed at strengthening Zambia's preparedness for the anticipated Super El Niño weather conditions.
Speaking during a media engagement in Lusaka, UNDP Resident Representative James Wakiaga said the contingency plan targets key sectors, including energy, health, nutrition and support for smallholder farmers, to help mitigate the potential impacts of the anticipated weather phenomenon.
Dr. Wakiaga said the United Nations is working closely with the Government of Zambia and the National Disaster Risk Management Division (NDRMD) to ensure the country is adequately prepared.
He also called on the media to help amplify public awareness messages on the anticipated Super El Niño to promote preparedness among communities.
Meanwhile, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) National Project Coordinator Esther Chingoma said more than 70,000 smallholder farmers have already benefited from interventions designed to improve their resilience to climate-related shocks.
And UN Resident Coordinator Beatrice Mutali said the United Nations remains committed to supporting the Zambian Government through technical expertise, resources and strategic partnerships aimed at advancing national development priorities.
