LUSAKA - The Zambia Army says a video circulating on social media showing soldiers flogging an apprehended illegal miner in North-Western Province is old, with disciplinary action already taken against those involved.
Zambia Army Spokesperson Sydney Mwewa said the soldiers seen in the video were positively identified as members of the Zambia Army.
Colonel Mwewa said the soldiers were charged over the incident, while Platoon Commander Lieutenant Japhet Banda, who was responsible for the troops at the time, was dismissed from the Army.
He said it was unfortunate that the public had learnt about the incident after the Army had already taken action against the soldiers involved.
Colonel Mwewa told ZNBC News in a statement that the Zambia Army does not condone indiscipline in any form, adding that the conduct shown in the video was contrary to the values of professionalism, discipline and respect for human dignity.
He said any soldier found wanting would be dealt with firmly in accordance with the Defence Act, Chapter 106 of the Laws of Zambia.
Colonel Mwewa said the Army remained committed to maintaining high standards of discipline and accountability.
He said measures were continually being strengthened to ensure that the conduct of soldiers reflected the honour and integrity expected of the Zambia Army.
