CARNARVON, SOUTH AFRICA - A 22-year-old man in South Africa's Northern Cape Province has been sentenced to 20 years' direct imprisonment for raping his 42-year-old mother at their home in Carnarvon.

The incident occurred on November 23, 2025, while the victim was asleep.

According to police, the woman woke up and realised that her son was the perpetrator. She screamed and confronted him, causing him to stop and leave her immediately.

The woman alerted her husband, but the accused fled from the house.

The matter was reported to police, who opened investigations. The case was subsequently assigned to Detective Constable Leevirne Nathalie Raaf of the Carnarvon Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

The accused was later arrested after DNA analysis linked him to the offence.

He appeared before court on several occasions, with Detective Constable Raaf successfully opposing his applications for bail.

On Friday, August 28, 2026, the Carnarvon Regional Court convicted the man of rape and sentenced him to 20 years' direct imprisonment.

The court further ordered that he be placed on South Africa's National Register for Sex Offenders and declared him unfit to possess a firearm.
