LUSAKA - The National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) has clarified that no final decision was reached on the appointment of Stephen Kampyongo as Leader of the Opposition during a recent parliamentary caucus meeting.
NRPUP Secretary General Nonde Mubanga said the proposal to have Mr Kampyongo take up the position emerged during the latest meeting, but members had previously agreed to propose Ezra Tembo for the role.
Mr Mubanga said the earlier decision had already been communicated to the National Assembly through a formal letter.
He said the party was therefore surprised by reports suggesting that Mr Kampyongo had been selected by opposition members in Parliament, as the matter had already been addressed during an earlier caucus meeting.
Mr Mubanga said the party was subsequently compelled to issue a statement to set the record straight and address the confusion surrounding the proposed appointment.
He said the party believes the clarification has now settled the matter, maintaining that its earlier proposal was, and remains, for Mr Tembo to take up the position of Leader of the Opposition.
