LUSAKA - The United Party for National Development (UPND) has questioned the sincerity of Hot FM's congratulatory message to President Hakainde Hichilema following the August 13, 2026 General Elections.
UPND Media Director Mark Simuuwe said the party found the message "deeply ironic" in light of what he described as the radio station's editorial conduct during the election campaign.
Mr Simuuwe alleged that Hot FM repeatedly refused to carry UPND campaign advertisements, including those featuring President Hichilema and the Government's development record, while members of the Tonse/Pamodzi Alliance were allegedly given regular opportunities to appear on the station's programmes.
He said the UPND was often unable to secure comparable opportunities to respond to issues raised by opposition figures on Hot FM, forcing the party to seek alternative platforms to present its position.
The UPND Media Director further accused the station of continuing to host discussions questioning the credibility of the election results after the polls.
Mr Simuuwe said those advancing claims of electoral manipulation should provide credible evidence to support their allegations.
According to Mr Simuuwe, the media has a responsibility to remain fair, balanced, accurate and professional regardless of which political party is in power.
He said the UPND does not object to robust scrutiny or criticism of the Government but rejects what it considers selective access and political imbalance.
The party has therefore urged Hot FM and other media houses to reflect on their role in Zambia's democracy and recommit themselves to fairness, balance and responsible journalism.
