Former Army Secretary at the Ministry of Defence Evaristo Sakala has been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Commission -ACC- for corrupt practices involving US$400 million in relation to the procurement of the Gulfstream G650 presidential jet.
ACC Head of Corporate Affairs Timothy Moono says Mr. Sakala of Lusaka’s Chalala Township has been charged with one count of willful failure to comply with applicable law and procedure contrary to the laws of Zambia.
Mr Moono says details are that between 1st January, 2017 and 31st July, 2017, Mr. Sakala, being the Army Secretary and a member of the Ministerial Procurement Committee for the Ministry of Defence, whilst acting together with others, did willfully fail to comply with the applicable law and procedure in the manner he approved the award of the tender relating to the procurement of the modernization of the defence forces program.
In a statement, Mr Moono says the contract amount was US$400 million to Elbit Systems Limited.
Mr. Moono says the Commission has in the same matter arrested six individuals who include former Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defence Sturdy Mwale, former Defence Secretary retired Brigadier General Obister Mbewe and former Ministry of Defence Director General Medical Services retired Brigadier General Frank Sinyangwe among others.
