ZAMBIA IMPROVES ITS RANKING ON CORRUPTION PERCEPTION INDEX

Zambia has for the first time in 10 years improved its Corruption Perception Index score progressing from 33 out of 100 in 2022 to 37 out of 100 in 2023, according to Transparency International Zambia-TIZ-.

Presenting the 2023 Corruption Perception Index report in Lusaka today, TIZ Advocacy and Research Manager Bright Chizonde highlighted that the country improved rank by 18 places from 116 out of 180 countries in 2022 to 98 out of 180 countries in 2023.
Mr Chizonde says although there is a 4-point improvement in the CPI score, it does not mean that the prevalence of corruption has reduced to zero as the scourge continues to be endemic in zambia as the country remains an underperformer in the sub region.
He explains that countries such as Tanzania, South Africa, Namibia, Rwanda and Botswana have all performed better than Zambia in 2023.
And in response to the CPI findings, Ministry of Justice Permanent Secretary-Administration, Thandiwe Oteng said the report is reflective of the efforts by government of zero tolerance to corruption.
And Anti-Corruption Commission Director General Tom Shamakamba says the institution will not relent in fighting the scourge and is currently working on ensuring that corruption cases are tried and completed within 5 months.
