GOVT URGED TO PROVIDE CLEAR AND PREDICTABLE ROAD MAP ON ENERGY SECTOR CHALLENGES

As Zambia continues to grapple with severe load-shedding, the Centre for Trade Policy and Development-CTPD is concerned about Energy Minister Peter Kapala’s silence on this critical issue which has continued to prompt widespread concern among citizens, businesses and various stakeholders.

CTPD Executive Director Isaac Mwaipopo says the erratic and inconsistent load management has led to significant disruptions in daily life and economic activities as many households are experiencing prolonged power outages.

Mr Mwaipopo notes that small and large businesses alike are struggling to maintain operations, leading to economic losses and heightened uncertainty.

He says it is therefore imperative for the minister of energy to proactively engage the public and business community with answers to the current electricity crisis and explain the measures government is putting in place to sustainably resolve the crisis in the short and long term.

Mr Mwaipopo says it is disappointing that despite the severity of this issue, the minister of energy has elected to remain silent.

He has since called on President Hakainde Hichilema to introspect on the performance of Cabinet Ministers, adding that it will be important that the public is provided with leadership that inspires confidence and direction during such difficulty times.
