DHAKA - Bangladesh’s President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from office, citing serious health challenges that have made it difficult for him to continue carrying out his constitutional duties.
The 76-year-old stepped down nearly two years before the end of his five-year term after informing Parliament that he is suffering from autonomic neuropathy, a condition that reportedly causes him to lose consciousness on occasion.
Mr. Shahabuddin assumed office in April 2023 and served as Bangladesh’s largely ceremonial Head of State during a period of significant political instability.
He was widely regarded as an ally of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was removed from office during the 2024 political uprising and remains in exile.
His resignation comes amid heightened political tensions and months before Ms. Hasina’s anticipated return to Bangladesh, where she is expected to face legal proceedings.
Political analysts say Mr. Shahabuddin’s departure leaves the former Prime Minister without a key ally in one of the country’s highest offices.
Under Bangladesh’s Constitution, the Speaker of Parliament will perform the duties of President until a successor is elected.
