MONGU - A wanted suspect died after a confrontation with police during an attempted arrest in Mongu District, Western Province.
According to Western Province Police Commanding Officer Rae Hamoonga, the deceased, who was identified only by the aliases "Hustler" and "Michael Scofield," had been wanted in connection with several alleged offences, including aggravated robbery, murder, rape, theft, and breaking offences committed in Mongu and other parts of Western Province.
Mr. Hamoonga said police received intelligence that the suspect had booked accommodation at a guest house in the Kashumba area.
Acting on the information, officers conducted an operation at the guest house at around 14:30 hours with the intention of arresting the suspect.
Police said the suspect attempted to evade arrest by climbing onto the roof of the lodge before making his way onto a neighbouring property.
According to the police, officers pursued the suspect, who allegedly produced a knife and attempted to attack them during the chase.
Mr. Hamoonga said the officers discharged their firearms after assessing what they described as an imminent threat while carrying out their lawful duties.
The suspect was rushed to Lewanika General Hospital for medical treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police have urged individuals wanted for criminal offences to surrender peacefully when confronted by law enforcement officers, warning that attempts to violently resist arrest or attack officers may result in a lawful and proportionate response.
Mr. Hamoonga also appealed to members of the public to continue providing credible information to assist police in combating crime.
