LUSAKA - Former UPND Vice President for Politics and Patriotic Front (PF) National Chairman for Health) Dr. Canisius Banda has died, his family has confirmed.
Dr. Banda, a medical doctor, public health specialist and prominent Zambian political figure, died on Thursday, July 30, 2026. Details surrounding the cause of his death were not immediately available at the time of publication.
Dr. Banda trained as a medical doctor at the University of Zambia (UNZA) and later obtained a master's degree in public health. He went on to lecture at UNZA and other institutions.
He first gained a wider public profile while serving as a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, a position through which he became known in national public affairs.
Dr. Banda later rose through the ranks of the then-opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) to become the party's Vice President for Politics. He served in the position during the party's campaigns for the 2011 and 2016 General Elections and was regarded as one of the party's prominent political figures.
During his time in the UPND, Dr. Banda frequently spoke about the party's efforts to broaden its national appeal and address perceptions surrounding its political support base.
His relationship with the UPND later deteriorated. In September 2016, then UPND President Hakainde Hichilema suspended him as Vice President for Politics following statements the party described as inflammatory and defamatory towards senior party members.
Dr. Banda disputed aspects of his departure and denied reports that he had been paid to leave the party.
He subsequently joined the Patriotic Front, where he was appointed to lead the party's health portfolio and remained a prominent voice within the former ruling party.
From his position in the PF, Dr. Banda became a vocal critic of the UPND administration, frequently commenting on governance, the economy and national politics.
In recent months, he continued to participate actively in political debate through interviews and written commentary, including criticism of the current administration.
His death comes during a closely contested 2026 General Election campaign, with Zambians scheduled to vote on August 13, 2026.
