LUSAKA - President Hakainde Hichilema has congratulated Major General Galston Ngosa on his appointment as Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
In a statement issued by State House, President Hichilema said the appointment is a source of pride for Zambia and reflects the professionalism and discipline of the country's defence forces.
Major General Ngosa was nominated by the Government of Zambia and subsequently confirmed by the United Nations Secretariat following a competitive selection process.
He is expected to take up the appointment by September 6, 2026, for an initial term of one year.
Congratulating Major General Ngosa, President Hichilema said Zambia and the Zambia Defence Force are honoured by the appointment, describing it as an opportunity for a Zambian officer to serve in one of the United Nations' most important missions.
"We congratulate Major General Galston Ngosa on this appointment, and we congratulate the Zambian Defence Force, when the United Nations selects a Zambian officer for one of the most demanding command roles in one of its largest missions, it is telling the world something about the professionalism and the discipline of our men and women in uniform," President Hichilema said.
The President said Zambia's soldiers have served in peacekeeping missions for decades and have consistently demonstrated professionalism, quietly helping to build peace across Africa.
He said the appointment of Major General Ngosa was a reflection of the contribution made by Zambian peacekeepers to international peace and security.
"Our soldiers have served the cause of peace on this continent for decades, quietly and without seeking credit, from the Central African Republic to Mozambique and beyond. That record was built by generations of Zambian officers before him, and Major General Ngosa now carries it into South Sudan," he said.
President Hichilema expressed confidence in Major General Ngosa's leadership and assured him and his family of Government's support.
"We wish with Major General Ngosa strength and good judgement in his new command, and we assure him and his family of the full support of the Government and people of Zambia," he said.
The President also thanked the Ministry of Defence, Zambia Army Command and the Permanent Mission of Zambia to the United Nations in New York for their efforts in advancing Zambia's nomination.
