NAMWALA – The NRPUP–Tonse Pamodzi Alliance in Southern Province has alleged that one of its campaign teams was attacked while conducting campaign activities in Namwala District.
According to a statement issued by the Alliance's Southern Province Political Chairperson, Protacial Mulenga, the incident occurred while the party's aspiring Member of Parliament for Namwala West Constituency, Mary Sakala, was campaigning in rural parts of the district.
The Alliance said Ms. Sakala was accompanied by her Campaign Manager, Mr. Skanyiti, when the group was allegedly attacked by individuals it claims were United Party for National Development (UPND) supporters together with a local headman.
Ms. Sakala condemned the alleged attack, saying members of her campaign team were assaulted with sticks in what she described as mob justice.
She stated that Mr. Skanyiti sustained head injuries during the incident, while several other campaign team members were also assaulted.
According to the Alliance, the injured were treated at Namwala Hospital, and the matter has since been reported to the Zambia Police Service.
Following the incident, the party has advised all its candidates to travel and campaign in groups as it moves to strengthen security arrangements for its campaign teams.
The Alliance condemned political violence and appealed for calm while law enforcement agencies investigate the matter.
At the time of publication, the UPND and the Zambia Police Service had not publicly responded to the allegations, which remain unverified.
