LUSAKA - State House has expressed concern over the use of derogatory language during the ongoing election campaigns, urging political leaders to focus on policies rather than personal attacks.
State House Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka said it was unfortunate that some opposition figures, including Socialist Party leader Dr. Fred M'membe, continue to use insulting language when referring to President Hakainde Hichilema instead of presenting alternative policy proposals to voters.
Speaking to Phoenix News, Mr. Hamasaka said some opposition leaders have consistently demonstrated hostility towards President Hichilema and the ruling UPND, adding that their position has remained unchanged since the party was in opposition.
He said the use of demeaning language reflects poorly on those making such remarks and should not divert attention from issue-based campaigns ahead of the general elections.
Mr. Hamasaka added that it is ultimately up to the Zambian people to decide whether such conduct will help or hinder the opposition during the polls.
His remarks follow comments made by Dr. M'membe during a radio programme in Southern Province, where he likened President Hichilema to a dumpsite and questioned why Zambians would want to "recycle" him by granting him another term in office.
