BLANTYRE, MALAWI - Police in Bangwe, Blantyre, have arrested three men in connection with the alleged robbery of a cyclist after reportedly luring him into a planned ambush.
The suspects have been identified as Benson Matiya, Matthews Falaston, and Henry Mapira.
According to Bangwe Police Spokesperson Sam Kadyole, preliminary investigations indicate that the three suspects allegedly worked together to carry out the robbery.
Police allege that one of the suspects approached the cyclist and claimed that he needed transport to Sadiki Village, where he intended to collect his child.
As the cyclist travelled towards the stated destination, two other suspects allegedly emerged from nearby bushes and intercepted them.
The three men are accused of forcibly taking the bicycle before covering the victim’s face with sacks and fleeing from the scene.
The victim reportedly raised an alarm, attracting members of the public who pursued the suspects and managed to apprehend all three before handing them over to police.
The suspects remain in police custody and are expected to appear in court as investigations continue.
