LUSAKA - The University Teaching Hospitals (UTH) Adult Hospital, in partnership with humanitarian organisation Love Without Reason, has successfully performed corrective surgeries on 17 patients born with cleft lip and palate deformities during a specialised surgical camp held in Lusaka.
The life-changing procedures were carried out from July 19 to 23, 2026, through a collaborative effort between the UTH Adult Hospital Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit and a team of local and international medical specialists.
A cleft lip is a congenital condition in which a baby is born with an opening or split in the upper lip, while a cleft palate is an opening in the roof of the mouth. The condition can affect feeding, speech development and self-confidence if left untreated.
According to UTH Adult Hospital, the surgical camp forms part of an ongoing partnership with Love Without Reason, which provides free reconstructive surgeries to children and adults living with cleft lip and palate conditions.
The international medical team was led by Love Without Reason Director Santhosh Mathews, while UTH's team included Dr. Mildred Nakazwe, Dr. Chihena Banda, and Dr. Moses Mtonga from the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit.
Speaking after the successful surgical camp, Dr. Mildred Nakazwe thanked Love Without Reason for its continued support, stating that the partnership has improved access to specialised reconstructive healthcare while strengthening the skills of local medical professionals.
She said the successful surgeries reflect UTH Adult Hospital's commitment to delivering quality healthcare services and improving the lives of patients living with congenital facial deformities.
UTH Adult Hospital added that it will continue building partnerships that enhance specialised medical services and expand access to life-changing surgical interventions for more Zambians.
