LUMEZI – The Ministry of Tourism has confirmed the death of Wildlife Police Officer Justin Phiri, 49, who was killed in the line of duty after being attacked by a buffalo during a routine wildlife patrol in Lumimba Game Management Area in Lumezi District.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry's Principal Public Relations Officer, Nelly Chewe, the incident occurred on 19 July 2026 while Mr. Phiri and his team were conducting a 10-day wildlife patrol.
Mr. Phiri, who was stationed at Chakolwa Wildlife Camp in the Mwanya Sector, was leading the patrol when the team encountered a wounded male buffalo with a broken front limb in the Kapompo area of the game management area.
The Ministry said the buffalo suddenly charged at the patrol team, forcing officers to take evasive action.
In an attempt to protect his colleagues, Mr. Phiri fired at the charging animal in self-defence. However, the buffalo reached him before it could be stopped, inflicting fatal injuries.
The animal was later put down by members of the patrol team.
The incident was reported to Mwase Waminga Police Post, where officers from the Zambia Police Service and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) visited the scene and confirmed Mr. Phiri's death.
His body has since been transferred to Mambwe District Hospital Mortuary.
The Ministry of Tourism described Mr. Phiri as a dedicated officer who lost his life while protecting Zambia's wildlife and natural resources, and extended its condolences to his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.
