LUSAKA - The Consortium of Civil Society for Good Governance and Constitutionalism has condemned the escalating incidents of electoral violence being reported across Zambia ahead of the August 13 General Election.
Speaking to Phoenix News, Acting Consortium Spokesperson Clifton Chifuwe expressed concern over video footage, photographs and reports gathered by the consortium's election monitors, which he said indicate that some of the reported incidents involve supporters and cadres of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND).
Mr. Chifuwe commended President Hakainde Hichilema for publicly condemning electoral violence, reaffirming the Government's commitment to peaceful elections and directing the Zambia Police Service to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
He said the consortium is urging the Zambia Police Service to enforce the law impartially and without fear or favour, including taking action against ruling party cadres or any other individuals found to have engaged in acts of political violence.
Mr. Chifuwe emphasized that the rule of law must take precedence over political affiliation if Zambia is to maintain a credible and peaceful electoral process.
He further appealed to UPND leaders, officials and members across the country to exercise restraint and provide responsible leadership during the remaining days of the campaign period.
The consortium reiterated its call on all political parties, candidates and supporters to reject violence and uphold peace as the country prepares to head to the polls.
