LUSAKA - Social media personality Elias Musyani has been released on police bond after being formally charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal road traffic accident in Lusaka.
Musyani, 33, of Makeni Bonaventure, confirmed that he was detained by police, investigated and charged with one count of causing death by dangerous driving. He is expected to appear in court to answer the charge.
In a statement, Musyani acknowledged his involvement in the accident, which resulted in the death of one person.
"As confirmed by the Zambia Police spokesperson, indeed Elias Musyani was involved in a fatal road accident resulting in the unfortunate death of one person," he said.
He stated that the accident occurred along Ring Road and said efforts to rush the victim to hospital were unsuccessful.
According to Musyani, he was later released on police bond in line with standard Zambia Police traffic procedures.
He also condemned what he described as "malicious, unverified reports" circulating on social media regarding the incident and indicated that he intends to pursue legal action against those responsible.
"The loss of a life is truly regrettable. As a family and from myself we offer our heartfelt and sincere apologies and condolences to the bereaved family," Musyani said.
He further appealed to the public to respect the privacy of the deceased's family during their period of mourning.
"This is a traumatic time for all parties involved. We plead with the general public, particularly for sympathy and respect for privacy to the family of the deceased as they are mourning their loved one," he said.
The matter is expected to proceed before the courts.
