LUSAKA - The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested two 29-year-old men in separate operations in Muchinga and Copperbelt Provinces for alleged trafficking in cannabis.
The suspects were apprehended during joint operations conducted by officers from the DEC and the Zambia Police Service.
In Muchinga Province, Mackson Kaonga, of Malango Village in Isoka District, was arrested for allegedly trafficking 34.6 kilogrammes of dry loose cannabis.
DEC Deputy Spokesperson Theresa Mawere said the cannabis was concealed in polythene bags and was allegedly intended for distribution to members of the public.
Ms. Mawere described Kaonga as a suspected major supplier of cannabis in Malango Village and surrounding areas, saying his arrest was a significant breakthrough in efforts to curb the illegal drug trade.
Meanwhile, in Mpongwe District on the Copperbelt, the Commission arrested and charged Francis Chinama, a 29-year-old of Kapapula Village in Masaiti District.
Chinama was apprehended in Masaiti District in connection with the alleged trafficking of 1.3 kilogrammes of loose cannabis contained in 283 balls.
Ms. Mawere said both suspects had been detained in lawful custody pending court proceedings.
The DEC has since warned members of the public against engaging in illegal activities that could undermine the country's social and economic development.
The Commission has also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities as part of efforts to combat drug trafficking and other forms of crime.
