LUSAKA – Zambia continues to mourn the passing of renowned physician, public health expert and politician Dr. Canicius Banda, whose life has been celebrated as one marked by courage, service and an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of ordinary citizens.
In a tribute, former Minister of Health Dr. Chitalu Chilufya described Dr. Banda as an exceptional patriot whose contributions to healthcare, politics and public service would inspire generations to come.
According to Dr. Chilufya, their friendship extended far beyond public life. He recalled sharing homes, life experiences and a deep appreciation for music, describing Dr. Banda as an intelligent, warm-hearted and loyal friend whose personal qualities matched his public achievements.
Pioneer in Medical Leadership
Dr. Banda's leadership journey began at the University of Zambia School of Medicine, where he became the inaugural leader of the University of Zambia Medical Students Union (UNZAMEDSU) after guiding its transition from the former UNZAMEDSA.
His efforts established a platform dedicated to advancing the welfare of medical professionals while promoting quality patient care, laying the foundation for a new era of medical leadership in Zambia.
Champion of Healthcare Reform
In 1999, Dr. Banda emerged as one of Zambia's most prominent healthcare advocates while serving as National Chairman of the Resident Doctors Association.
He led a nationwide strike by junior doctors, calling for improved medical equipment, adequate medicine supplies and safer working conditions in public hospitals. Despite facing significant pressure, he maintained that healthcare professionals should not be forced to work under conditions that endangered patients.
His advocacy is widely regarded as a defining moment in Zambia's healthcare sector.
Career in Public Service
Dr. Banda later entered politics, serving in several influential positions, including:
Vice President for Politics in the United Party for National Development (UPND).
Chairperson for Health and Central Committee member in the Patriotic Front (PF).
Public Health Specialist and spokesperson for the Ministry of Health.
Throughout his career, he remained an outspoken advocate for healthcare reform, accountable governance and policies aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.
A Lasting Legacy
Dr. Chilufya said Dr. Banda consistently challenged injustice while inspiring hope through both his professional and public life.
He noted that Dr. Banda's guiding words, "Emit light. Occasion good. Build lives," reflected the principles by which he lived.
Dr. Banda passed away on July 31, 2026, leaving behind a legacy that spans medicine, politics and public service.
