LUSAKA - Renowned economist Dr. Grieve Chelwa says Zambia's relationship with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has failed to deliver meaningful benefits to the lives of ordinary citizens.
Dr. Chelwa, who is also an Associate Professor of Political Economy and Chair of the Social Sciences Department at The Africa Institute, said Zambia's engagement with the IMF has consistently produced negative outcomes rather than improving the welfare of its people.
He argued that many of the country's current economic challenges stem from IMF-backed policies, including the privatisation of Zambia's mines.
Speaking ahead of the launch of his book, How IMF Strangles Africa, later this week, Dr. Chelwa said the IMF has cast a dark shadow over Zambia's development.
He added that there is no clear example where the country's engagement with the global lender has significantly improved the lives of the majority of Zambians.
