LUSAKA - Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro has clarified that voters can use any single mark on a ballot paper, provided the mark is placed entirely within the designated box of the candidate they intend to vote for.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting, Mr. Kasaro said although the ECZ traditionally uses an “X” in voter education materials, an X is not the only valid mark.
He explained that voters may use an X, tick, dash or another clear mark, provided it remains within the space allocated to their preferred candidate and does not extend into another candidate’s section.
Mr. Kasaro warned voters against misinformation suggesting that placing an X on a candidate amounts to rejecting that candidate before selecting another.
He stressed that only one mark should be made for the chosen candidate, adding that multiple marks that create uncertainty about a voter’s choice could result in the ballot being rejected.
He also advised voters not to sign the ballot paper or write their names or initials on it.
“Voters out there, don’t sign, don’t put your initials on the ballot. Just tick or put an X for the candidate of your choice,” Mr. Kasaro said.
Artificial Nails Will Not Prevent Anyone From Voting
Meanwhile, Mr. Kasaro has dismissed claims that people with artificial or painted nails will not be allowed to vote.
He said polling officers have been instructed to apply indelible ink to both the base of the nail and the surrounding skin to ensure there is a clear indication that a voter has cast their ballot.
Mr. Kasaro urged voters with artificial nails not to be discouraged from participating in the election.
He said eligibility to vote is determined by possession of the required voter identification, including the voter’s card and NRC, and being a registered voter.
He assured voters that they would be properly marked regardless of the size, colour or type of their nails.
