LUSAKA - Social media personality Elias Musyani has been detained by police after a road traffic accident in Lusaka claimed the life of a 48-year-old woman.
According to Zambia Police, the fatal accident occurred around 19:00 hours on Saturday along Tokyo Way and involved three motor vehicles and a pedestrian.
Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi identified the deceased as Idah Banda, 48, of Libala South.
Mr. Chilabi said preliminary investigations indicate that Musyani, 33, of Makeni Bonaventure, was driving a Toyota Vitz bearing registration number CAD 4556 from west to east when he allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed.
Police said the vehicle struck the pedestrian, who was walking off the roadway, before colliding with two oncoming vehicles, a Toyota Vitz (registration number AQB 966) and a Toyota Axio (registration number BBA 8198).
Ms. Banda sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH). Her body has since been deposited in the UTH Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Mr. Chilabi said Musyani sustained minor injuries and was treated and discharged from UTH, while the drivers of the other two vehicles escaped unhurt.
Police have since detained Musyani for the offence of causing death by dangerous driving, and he is expected to appear before court.
The Zambia Police Service extended its condolences to the bereaved family and urged motorists to observe speed limits and exercise due care to help prevent road traffic accidents.
