From Recovery to Record Growth: How KCM Reignited Zambia's Copper Giant

CHINGOLA - Two years after Vedanta Resources resumed stewardship of Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), one of Zambia's most important mining assets is once again setting the pace for investment, production and long-term growth.

Two years ago, KCM stood at one of the lowest points in its history. Years of operational uncertainty had slowed production, stalled investment, left creditors unpaid and raised difficult questions about the future of one of Zambia's largest employers.

Confidence had faded, underground development had slowed dramatically and a mine once regarded as the country's crown jewel appeared to have lost its momentum.

Today, the conversation surrounding KCM is markedly different.

Since returning under Vedanta Resources' stewardship in July 2024, the company has invested more than US$705 million into Zambia, accelerated production, revived the Konkola Deep Mining Project (KDMP) and restored confidence among employees, suppliers, government and investors.

The scale of the turnaround has become one of the Copperbelt's significant industrial recovery stories.

A Mine Moving Again

Mining recoveries are rarely measured by announcements. They are measured in tonnes produced, development metres advanced and capital deployed underground. By those measures, KCM's progress has been substantial.

The clearest measure of KCM's resurgence lies underground. Since operations resumed under Vedanta's stewardship, overall production has more than doubled, while integrated production has tripled year-on-year.

Underground development at the Konkola Deep Mining Project, the mine widely regarded as Zambia's future copper powerhouse, has also accelerated dramatically.

Development metres have increased ten-fold compared to pre-reinstatement levels, with monthly advance rates now the highest recorded in more than a decade.

Over the past two years, KCM has injected approximately US$705 million into the mine, with the investment extending to KDMP development, mine infrastructure, ZRA tax contributions, local job creation, opportunities for local suppliers and businesses, stronger household incomes, and community investments aimed at improving education, healthcare, infrastructure and long-term economic resilience.

The investment has also strengthened confidence that long-term capital is once again flowing into one of Zambia's most strategic industries.

KDMP: Unlocking Zambia's Copper Future

If KCM's recovery has a centrepiece, it is the Konkola Deep Mining Project.

For decades, mining experts have regarded KDMP as one of the world's richest undeveloped copper resources. Years of underinvestment, however, significantly slowed progress. That trajectory has now changed.

Development metres have increased ten-fold compared to the period before reinstatement, while monthly advance rates are now the highest recorded in more than a decade.

The pace of underground development reflects improved planning and sustained capital investment.

This year alone, KCM plans to develop approximately 44 kilometres underground while targeting annual copper production of around 85,000 tonnes.

The company has also committed to investing more than US$1 billion into KDMP to unlock its full production potential. The investment is expected to position the mine among the world's leading high-grade underground copper operations.

As global demand for copper accelerates, driven by electric vehicles, renewable energy systems and digital infrastructure, the strategic importance of KDMP continues to grow.

For Zambia, the project represents more than increased production. It reinforces the country's position as one of the world's premier suppliers of a mineral central to the global energy transition.

KCM's recovery has also translated into measurable returns for the Zambian economy. Over the past two years, the company's operations have contributed significantly to the Treasury through mineral royalties, PAYE, VAT and withholding taxes.

These revenues support national development while reinforcing mining's continued role as one of Zambia's most important economic pillars.

Two years after its return, KCM is no longer focused on recovery. It is building for the future.

For Zambia's mining industry, the revival of one of its most iconic operations signals more than the return of a mine. It signals the return of confidence.
