LUSAKA - Government has urged the Copper Queens to fight for victory in their final WAFCON Group C encounter against Malawi, saying a win is crucial for Zambia's hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
Malawi currently leads Group C with six points and only requires a draw to secure qualification, while Zambia, with three points, needs maximum points from the match to keep their campaign alive.
Speaking to ZNBC Sports, Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Principal Public Relations Officer Nchimunya Ng'andu urged the team to give everything in pursuit of the three points.
Ng'andu said Zambia's 1-0 defeat to Nigeria was disappointing and could have been avoided, but the Copper Queens must now focus on securing victory against Malawi to avoid an early exit from the tournament.
Meanwhile, Copper Queens players Hellen Chanda and Eneless Phiri have expressed confidence that the team can still qualify for the next round if they defeat Malawi.
Chanda said the team understands the mistakes made against Nigeria and is determined to deliver a better performance in the crucial encounter.
Phiri added that the players are eager to return to winning ways and will give their best effort against Malawi.
