Govt Completes Expansion of National Assembly Chamber

LUSAKA - Government has completed major works to expand the National Assembly chamber to accommodate the increased membership of Parliament.

Infrastructure Development Permanent Secretary Albert Malama said the remaining works are expected to be fully completed by August 27, 2026.

Professor Malama explained that the expansion was necessitated by the increase in the composition of Parliament, which includes the addition of 70 constituency seats to the previous 156 seats.

He said the new composition also provides for 40 nominated seats, of which 20 will be allocated to women, 15 to the youth and five to persons with disabilities.

Professor Malama said Government, in consultation with the National Assembly, opted to expand the existing chamber instead of constructing a new building.

Meanwhile, Professor Malama said the expansion of the Parliament Motel is expected to be completed by the end of October 2026.
